Three Ways to Track Strength Training on a Garmin Watch, Compared
Every guide tells you to press Strength and start the timer. None of them tells you what the data looks like a month later. There are three real setups on a Garmin: the native activity, a structured workout built in Connect, and a phone app with a watch companion. They cost different amounts of effort during the set and keep different amounts of your training afterwards. Here is what each one actually stores, what it quietly drops, and the six-week test that tells you which one fits you.
Search for how to track strength training on a Garmin and you get the same answer a dozen times: press Strength, start the timer, the watch counts your reps. That is accurate. It is also the least interesting part of the question, because every one of those guides stops at the moment the session starts, and the thing that actually decides whether Garmin works for lifters is what the data looks like a month later.
There are three real setups. Watch only, Connect-built workouts, and a phone app with a watch companion. They cost different amounts of effort during the set and they keep different amounts of your training afterwards. Setup 1: the native Strength activity, watch only
Zero setup, zero cost, already on your wrist. Press Strength, press start, lift. The accelerometer counts reps and shows you a number once you pass four of them. Press to end the set, the rest timer appears, and during that rest window you can correct the rep count and type in the weight you used. Press again for the next set. Garmin documents all of this in the owner’s manual for basically every watch it sells.
Three costs, none of which show up until you are actually under a bar.
The first is the typing. Adding weight is per set, on a watch, in the ninety seconds you were going to spend breathing. A twenty-two set session is twenty-two of those. Most people do it for a week and then quietly stop, which is why so many Garmin strength activities in the wild carry rep counts and no loads at all.
The second is that rep counting reads wrist motion, so it counts a rep when the arm wearing the watch returns to where it started. That works for a strict press. It reads a shrug, a rack position, or a paused squat with a lot more imagination. Garmin also documents that one set counts one movement, so a superset means finishing the set and starting a new one every time you swap.
The third is the one nobody warns you about. Run the activity long enough and the rep counter can quietly stop advancing with no alert, no error, and a timer that keeps ticking. We wrote that up separately in why your Garmin stops logging mid-squat-day.
Best for: lifters who want the session to exist in Garmin Connect and to count toward the week, and who genuinely do not care about per-set load history.
Setup 2: build the workout in Garmin Connect first
The step up, still with no third-party app. You build a structured strength workout in Garmin Connect on your phone or a browser, with exercises, sets, reps and rest, then send it to the watch. During the session the watch shows you what is next instead of asking you to remember it, and it holds the rest timers for you.
This is a real improvement and it is underused. It also has a specific shape that decides whether it fits you: it is a prescription, not a record. The watch knows what you were told to do. It does not thereby know what you did. Load is still yours to enter, and the moment you deviate, which is most sessions if you autoregulate at all, you are back in the rest window editing fields on a two-inch screen.
It also has an authoring cost. Every program change means going back to Connect, on a different device, outside the gym.
Best for: lifters running a fixed written plan who want wrist guidance and are willing to author it in Connect.
Setup 3: a phone app with a watch companion
The third setup splits the job. The phone holds the program, the history, and the exercise library. The watch runs the session on your wrist. When you finish, the session is written into Garmin Connect as a standard FIT activity through the same import path Garmin’s partners use, which is why Training Load, Body Battery and readiness treat it like any other activity rather than like a note you left yourself. What that buys you is the set record itself. Each set carries an exact repetition count rather than an estimate, the weight in kilograms at the format’s 1/16 kg resolution so a 70 lb log arrives as 31.75 kg instead of rounding to a whole number, the timestamp it finished at, and a set type, so warmup sets do not pollute your working numbers. Being precise about one of those: a timed set carries the duration the watch measured, but a rep set carries an estimate of roughly three seconds a rep, because nothing timed it. The rest interval between two sets is worked back from that, so treat rest lengths on rep work as approximate. Exercise identity travels as the two integers Garmin actually reads, which is a stranger story than it sounds and one we told in why Garmin Connect doesn’t show the exercise you actually did.
The costs are equally concrete. It is a second app to install. It needs a Bluetooth link between the watch and the phone during the session, so the phone comes to the gym. Rack runs on 60 or more Garmin models, which is most of the current Fenix, Forerunner, Venu, Vivoactive, Instinct and Epix range, but not on every watch Garmin has ever shipped.
Best for: lifters who want load history and progression, and hybrid athletes who need lifting and running to sit in one training load instead of two.
Pick by what you care about
- I want the session to count and nothing else. Native Strength. Stop reading, it already does this.
- I follow a written plan and want it on my wrist. Structured workouts in Garmin Connect.
- I want to know what I lifted six months ago. A phone app with a watch companion, because per-set load has to be stored before it can be trended.
- I lift and I run. Whatever gets your lifting into Connect as a real activity, so both halves land in one place. See the hybrid athlete case.
The question the guides never ask
Progression is the whole point of lifting, and progression is a function of load over time. If the load was never stored, there is no trend to compute, and no amount of clever analysis later can recover it. That is the real dividing line between these three setups, and it is invisible on day one. Setup one and setup two both can hold your weights and both make you type them one set at a time. Setup three records them because recording them is the job.
The honest test is not which setup is better. It is whether you will still be entering weights by hand in week six. If the answer is yes, native is genuinely fine and free.
Who should stay on native Garmin
Plenty of people. If lifting is your accessory work around a running block, if you do not care about a squat number, or if you deliberately keep your phone out of the gym, the native activity is the right tool and the other two setups are overhead you will resent. Garmin’s native strength mode is free, needs nothing installed, and has no Bluetooth link to drop.
